What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts for longer than three months, often persisting beyond the expected time of healing. It can affect any area of the body and may be constant or intermittent. Chronic pain is a complex condition that impacts not only the body but also your emotional and mental well-being.
It may stem from an initial injury or illness, but in some cases, it can develop without a clear cause. Over time, pain pathways in the nervous system become hypersensitive, making the body perceive pain more intensely or even in the absence of ongoing injury.
What Causes Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain can result from untreated injuries, nerve damage, musculoskeletal dysfunction, autoimmune conditions, or other health problems. Conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or previous surgeries can contribute to chronic pain.
Sometimes, chronic pain becomes centralized — meaning the pain persists even after the original source has healed — due to changes in how the brain and spinal cord process pain. Stress, inactivity, and poor movement patterns can further worsen symptoms.
