What is TMD and TMJ Pain?
TMD refers to a group of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects your jawbone to your skull. When this joint becomes irritated or dysfunctional, it can lead to jaw stiffness, pain, headaches, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth.
TMJ disorders are surprisingly common and can stem from a variety of causes — ranging from jaw injury to poor posture to muscle tension. Physical therapy offers an effective, non-invasive treatment route for most cases of TMD.
What Causes TMD and TMJ Pain?
Jaw pain can be caused by direct trauma to the face or jaw, repetitive stress from clenching or grinding teeth (bruxism), arthritis, or poor neck and head posture. Stress and muscle imbalance also play a significant role, as tension in the jaw and surrounding muscles can create strain on the joint.
Often, TMD is linked to issues beyond just the jaw — such as cervical spine dysfunction or muscle imbalances in the neck and shoulders — which is why a comprehensive evaluation is essential.
